Your glutes are home to the largest muscles in your body. When these muscles tighten or spasm, they can compress nearby nerves—most commonly the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back through the hips and down each leg. When pinched, this nerve causes radiating pain, numbness, tingling, and limited movement.
Right next door is the piriformis muscle, a small but powerful muscle that, when inflamed or overworked, can cause deep gluteal pain that mimics sciatica—without the leg pain. Though distinct, both conditions stem from tight, congested tissue in the hip and glute region and are best treated with a specialized combination of massage and movement.
